Since October 2006, Action Carbone offers to companies, institutions and individuals the possibility to evaluate and reduce their impact on the climate by neutralizing their emissions of greenhouse gases through the voluntary carbon market.

Since the Rio Conference in 1992 to the Bali conference in December 2007, the understanding of climate change’s causes and potential has increased.

Awareness of the urgency of action is coming late, but it seems to be - let’s stay optimistic - in motion. The grounds of a global agreement on the limitation of greenhouse gas emissions are set, an ambitious Climate Plan has been adopted by the European Commission and the most polluting countries aim to provide incentives for energy savings and renewable energy. Finally, a great number of public institutions, companies and individuals take action, voluntarily, for the image and/or conviction, in the battle against climate change.

Action Carbone targets to work with these voluntary players. Not by absolving them of their carbon footprint with a monetary contribution, but by proposing them a real support to evaluate, reduce and finally offset the CO2 emissions related to their activities. This consciousness and responsibility raising approach has been criticized but the urgent need to take action against global warming gives all its legitimacy to the voluntary offsetting.

The effort accomplished within a working group organized by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) enabled to create a national Code of Best Practices for the Voluntary Carbon Market, offering a guarantee for the quality of voluntary carbon offsetting. With Action Carbone, it is also about solidarity: the funds raised from carbon offsetting are channelled to projects developed by NGOs in Southern countries providing better energy access to those who fail to have it in a satisfactory manner.
